The Byeongsan Seowon is a Confucian academy and shrine honoring former Prime Minister and scholar Ryu Seong Ryong (actor Ryu Si Won's ancestor) who died in 1604.  It is off the beaten path in the Pungcheon area of the city of Andong.  Seowon means a Confucian academy and shrine in Korean.  The entrance to the Seowon is shown in the above left photo.  In the yard fronting the Seowon entrance is a tree and sign commemorating President George H. W. Bush and Mrs. Barbara Bush's visit to the Seowon on November 13, 2005.
The Seowon had an East and a West classroom facing each other.  The above left photo shows the East Classroom.  The Ibgyodang Lecture Hall (above right photo) is where the Academy's principal lived and taught his Confucian disciples.
The Mandaeru is a 2-story structure in the Seowon that is used for rest and study.  It has a breathtaking pananoramic view of of the mountain and river.  Its ceiling is a display of Korean architecture at its finest.
