We stopped at the Hahoe Folk Village on our way to Andong. The above photo shows a Wishing Tree in the village. People write their wishes on a sheet of paper, then tie it to the fence around this very old Zelkova tree. By doing so, their wish will come true.
What makes this folk village stand out from other villages, from the standpoint of a Korean TV drama addict, is that this is the ancestral village of actor Ryu Si Won. One of his ancestors was Ryu Seong Ryong who served as Prime Minister back in the days of Yi Soon Shin (late 16th to early 17th century) and also authored many history books under the pen name of Seoae. The photos shown above are of Ryu Seong Ryong's home, Chunghyodang. This home is unusual in the sense that the women's quarters is higher than the men's quarters (usually it's the other way around). This suggests that Ryu Seong Ryong had high regard for his wife.
This is the front gate to Ryu Si Won's parent's home in Hahoe Village. There are 2 name plates on the left side of the gate. The top plate shows Ryu Si Won's older brother's name. Ryu Si Won's name is shown on the lower plate since he is the second son. Ryu Si Won's father's name is on the plate on the right of the gate.
Neither Ryu Si Won nor his parents were home that day. We could see the security guard on duty through the crack in the door.
