This shrine was built in 1410 by King Taejong to honor King Taejo.  The birthplace of the Joseon Dynasty was in Jeonju.
Here is the portrait of King Sejong, the father of the Korean Hangeul alphabet.  The picture of King Sejong's face appearing on the 10,000 won note looks very similar to this portrait.
The shrine contains the only authentic portraits of the six Kings in the Joseon Dynasty that remain in existence today.  When we heard that we couldn't believe our ears.  You would think that the government would want to preserve these portraits so that they don't deteriorate further.  However, it did not appear that any special protective methods were used to preserve the portraits.  Aigu (i.e., "oh my goodness!").
