Yi Soon-shin is a famous Korean hero who all Korean children learn about in school. KBS made a TV drama about him in 2004 starring Kim Myung Min that proved to be extremely popular. Yi Soon-shin was responsible for the Turtle Ships (one of the first armored ships in the world) that enabled Korea to defeat invading Japanese naval forces.
We visited a filming site for the Immortal Yi Soon-shin drama located in Buan (a 2 hour ride from Damyang). This pavilion at the site faces the sea. There is a huge drum in the pavilion that was used to alert the Korean naval soldiers of any invasion by enemies. |
